Productions choose Bovingdon Airfield Studios for the space, flexibility and ease of getting things done - from expansive backlots and runways to premium sound stages and a well-connected site less than an hour from London. Production and location teams share what it’s like to work here, and why they’d recommend the studios.

Warfare

“In 2024 we started thinking about where we could shoot a factually based film set in the City of Ramadi during the Iraq war in 2006. I had, a few years before, filmed the last two episodes of Masters Of The Air at Bovingdon, and it was Bovingdon that I first picked up the phone to for this new project. Having explained the demands of the project - from the building of a composite real house in a real street, inside and out, to the almost constant gun fire and a very large explosion - the management at Bovingdon assured me that none of this would be a problem.

“They allowed us to repurpose the old flight control tower into our set. They moved a hill for us so that it acted as a backdrop to the street. They helped us get our firearms licence in order so we could fire blanks and set up a blank firing range for the actors’ boot camp training on the airfield. The result was a totally convincing Ramadi street set in Iraq. It is now impossible to imagine that we would have been able to shoot Warfare anywhere else!”

Matthew Penry Davey, Producer

“Bovingdon Airfield proved to be the perfect studio location for filming Warfare. Our Special Effects department required a large, flexible environment for extensive testing and filming, and the airfield provided exactly that over a six-month period in 2024. The team at Bovingdon were extremely accommodating and adaptable to the needs of our department. They supported a wide range of technical requirements, including high-explosive pyrotechnic testing, smoke tests, and other special effects work, and were able to facilitate both day and night operations throughout the production schedule.

“The scale of the site was a real asset. Bovingdon offered the space we needed to comfortably establish a fully functioning workshop, offices, and dedicated testing areas. Harvey, Kirstie, and the wider team consistently went above and beyond to support us. They were proactive, responsive, and always willing to help find practical solutions whenever challenges arose. Bovingdon Airfield was an excellent partner for our production, and we would not hesitate to work with them again.”

Ryan Conder, SFX Supervisor

“Setting up the entire production of Warfare [for Alex Garland & DNA Films / A24] at Bovingdon was an excellent choice for us. The site has the backlot space required for our large exterior build of an Iraqi street, plus good-sized workshops for departments. Given the nature of our film, with tanks, gunfire, lots of moving parts and a large cast, Bovingdon accommodated us well, and there were never any issues with the activities we had going on.

“The cast had a significant bootcamp training period with weapons training, and the site afforded us the space and privacy to achieve this safely. What really shone through was the lovely cooperation of the team at Bovingdon, who really looked after us with our multiple requests. The stages were excellent and useful for some VFX elements and publicity shoots. Would happily recommend Bovingdon and hope to return soon.”

Features

“Working at Bovingdon Airfield Studios during the production of The Conjuring: Last Rites was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. The facilities are first class - expansive, versatile stages that gave our creative team the space and flexibility to bring some truly ambitious sets to life. What really sets Bovingdon apart, though, is the people. From the moment we arrived on site, the staff were professional, warm, and deeply knowledgeable about the needs of a working film production. No request was too large or too last-minute, they consistently went above and beyond to ensure our shoot ran smoothly. I wouldn't hesitate to return to Bovingdon for future productions, and I'd recommend the studios without reservation.”

"I have been fortunate to work at Bovingdon Airfield Studios on two major projects - 1917 and Masters of the Air - over the last few years. The backlots and runways offer productions a wealth of possibilities so close to London, which include areas to create temporary sets, and valuable hardstanding. Whether you want to create a battlefield, or a motorway stunt sequence, the airfield complex is a great location to consider. The team that runs the Studios are nothing but helpful and go out of their way to assist productions."

Emma Pill

Supervising Location Manager

"Bovingdon Airfield Studios has proved a great location for the Filming of small and large Productions, Cyrano, "Fury", Fast and Furious, Bond and now with new 23,000sqft stages, workshops, the pre prepared ability to create a bespoke modular office complex and still maintaining the space to build large exterior sets.

The site is adaptable, flexible, close to London, well connected to the motorway, railway networks and, at around 100 acres, perfect for so many filming requirements.

A privately owned Studio run by a small team selected from different areas of the Industry and UK Business, having the focus to accommodate your every production need."

Television

"The Bovingdon Airfield Studios complex has been the home of Dancing on Ice, and an ever-expanding list of premium prime-time entertainment series for more than five years; the combination of extensive exterior space, privacy, accessibility, being just outside the M25 and less than an hour from London, has made it a perfect choice for us. The location and facilities are perfect for us but the relationship we enjoy with the team is even better — flexible, decent and trustworthy people are worth their weight in gold."

Jeanette Moffat

Head of Production, Lifted Entertainment (Part of ITV Studios)

"After filming at Bovingdon Airfield for two Series of ‘Britannia’ for SKY I can heartily recommend a facility that is well set up for Film & Television projects, especially with its clear skies and good width of horizon. All within range of London and with access to excellent transport links and many great locations in the area. The addition of more stages is a very welcome development, and the additional availability of outside build space makes the Airfield a very strong competitor to other facilities where backlot space can be in short supply."
