A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of attending a special screening of the short film Selvedge in Soho.
Filmed with us at Bovingdon Airfield Studios over an intense 48-hour period in September 2023, Selvedge made full use of the space at a time when many productions had been paused due to the Hollywood strikes. It was fantastic to welcome the team on-site and see the energy of a shoot return to the studio at that time.
The Story
Selvedge is a short sci-fi film set in a future where prejudice has driven mixed-species families of AI and humans into exile. At its heart is a daughter’s quest to reunite with her father by breaking through the divide that separates them. The film imagines a world unravelled by fear and difference yet bound by the quiet strength of familial love - a story woven with fragile threads of connection, resistance, and hope.

The Team
Selvedge was directed by Aleksandra Czenczek, written by Mehzeb Chowdhury, and stars Amelie Leroy, Olufemi Ajibade Houghton, and Ella-Rose Minott. With a female-led team at the helm - including co-producers Amina Hassam and Adriana Kulig - the production brought together a multicultural cast and crew, showcasing inclusive and collaborative filmmaking.
In the words of Director Aleksandra:
“What made me passionate about this story is that it’s a metaphor of the contemporary world. We live in a reality that is strongly polarised, where we are constantly told to be wary of people who are different from us, whether race, religion, looks or values. That fear creates a wall that disconnects us and is making us less human to each other.
In Selvedge it is the faith of the little girl who is brave enough to break down the wall. Her trust and need for connection with her father is stronger than any divisions that the world around her presents. I really think in the present climate, more than ever, we need stories to unite people rather than divide us. I hope that Selvedge will speak to audiences in that way.”

The Filming
The production embraced a sustainable ethos, making the most of natural resources and existing locations, with minimal set builds and using recyclable materials for props wherever possible.
Producer Amina Hassam described the experience as:
“Hugely challenging but great fun. I wanted to do justice to the script and bring Aleksandra’s vision for the film of this dystopian world to the screen - which had big ambitions but a very small budget! I feel that we achieved this by collaborating with a very talented team”.

Official Selection - The ‘225 Film Club’ Festival
The film, which received generous support from stakeholders including the Hertfordshire Film Office, has bold ambitions to enter global film festivals and reach audiences via streaming platforms. It has already been accepted onto the DUST film platform, known for showcasing innovative sci-fi storytelling. It also marked its first success with a world premiere at the BFI, as part of the official selection for the ‘225 Film Club’ festival, which celebrates female excellence in directing. Most recently, the team were thrilled by its selection for the E14 Indie Film Festival, which took place on the Isle of Dogs at the end of April.
